Equestrian Disciplines Explained

Horse riding is so much more than just riding around in the arena. Equestrian sports are full of different disciplines, each with its own style, energy, and training method. In this blog, you'll discover all twelve disciplines within equestrian sports and get a clear idea of which direction suits you best!

Equestrian Disciplines: All Types at a Glance

Below you will find all the different disciplines within equestrian sports, with a brief explanation for each part about what makes this discipline so unique.

1.     Dressage
This discipline is all about communication, correct posture, and subtle aids. You work on balance, suppleness, and strength, so that your horse or pony can use its body well.

2.     Showjumping
In showjumping, you combine technique with rhythm. You learn to ride lines, maintain pace, and precisely feel when your horse needs to take off. It gives you a great boost of energy and makes your horse even more agile and alert.

3.     Eventing
Eventing consists of dressage, showjumping, and a cross-country ride through nature. It requires versatile training and trust between you as the rider and your four-legged friend. The variety makes this discipline adventurous and challenging.

4.     Endurance
Endurance is long-distance riding over varied terrain. You train your horse or pony's stamina, pace estimation, and recovery ability. Along the way, you enjoy long rides and the teamwork required to reach the finish together.

5.     Driving
In driving, you ride with a harnessed horse or pony pulling a carriage. You work on steering skills, communication, and control. This discipline offers a completely different experience than riding in the saddle, but requires just as much cooperation.

6.     Vaulting
Vaulting is gymnastics on a horse on a lunge line. You train balance, rhythm, and body control while performing simple to acrobatic exercises.

7.     Reining
This unique discipline comes from Western riding. You ride patterns with stops, spins, and precise maneuvers. It requires control, suppleness, and a horse or pony that responds lightly to your aids.

8.     Working Equitation
In Working Equitation, you ride a course with obstacles that represent practical situations. You open a gate, ride a neat slalom, or steer through a narrow passage. It is a varied discipline where you work on control and precision.

9.     Horseball
Horseball is a fast-paced team sport where you score by throwing the ball into the opposing team's hoop. You work on cooperation, speed, and agility.

10.  TREC
TREC combines navigation, technical obstacles, and controlled riding. It is very suitable for riders who love being in nature and want to improve their trail riding skills.

11.  Polo
In polo, you play in teams at high speed and try to hit the ball towards the goal with a wooden mallet. It requires timing, strategy, and good teamwork.

12.  Mounted Games
Mounted Games consist of agility games that you ride at high speed. You learn to switch quickly, steer precisely, and work together with your pony.

Choosing Equestrian Disciplines: Tips for Selection

The range of disciplines is vast, which can sometimes make it difficult to determine what truly suits you and your horse or pony. These tips will help you get started!

Tips for discovering what suits you and your horse

Finding the right discipline often starts with trying things out. Consider the character of your horse or pony and your own riding goals. Do you like excitement or peace and technique? By taking a few trial lessons, you'll quickly discover which direction you both enjoy. Sometimes a combination of disciplines works even better than one fixed choice.

How different disciplines reinforce each other

Many riders find that varying training offers benefits. Dressage helps you improve your jumps, trail rides strengthen trust, and vaulting exercises can improve your posture. By cleverly mixing disciplines, your loyal companion remains physically and mentally fit, and training stays fun and varied for you too.
