Horse Saddles: How to Choose the Right Saddle? Read it Here!

A good saddle makes a big difference when riding. Not only for you as a rider, but also for your horse. However, many riders find it difficult to choose the right saddle. The range of horse saddles is extensive and there are many differences in type, fit, and material. In this blog, you'll discover how to choose the right saddle for your horse and what to look for when purchasing!

Types of Horse Saddles

Not every saddle is made for the same discipline. Therefore, there are different types of horse saddles, each with its own function. The shape, seat position, and support vary per saddle type.

Most Commonly Used Horse Saddles

  • Dressage Saddle: This saddle has a deep seat and long saddle flaps. This allows the rider, with a long leg position, to sit close to the horse and give subtle aids, which is important in dressage.
  • Jumping Saddle: The jumping saddle is specifically designed for jumping over obstacles. It has a slightly flatter seat and forward-placed saddle flaps, making it easier for the rider to assume a forward position during jumping.
  • All-Purpose Saddle: This saddle combines features of a dressage and jumping saddle. As a result, it is suitable for various disciplines and is often used by recreational riders and beginners.
  • Trekking Saddle/Endurance Saddle: These saddles are developed for long trail rides. They offer extra comfort and stability and distribute the rider's weight well over the horse's back. They often also have extra attachment points for luggage.
  • Western Saddle: Western saddles are mainly used in Western riding sports. They are larger and heavier than English saddles and have a characteristic horn at the front.

By knowing the different types of horse saddles, you can better determine which saddle best suits your discipline, riding style, and horse.

What to Look for When Buying a Saddle?

When choosing a saddle, it's not just about the discipline, but primarily about a good fit for your horse. A saddle that doesn't fit well can cause pressure points and lead to discomfort or even injuries. The saddle must provide enough space at the Withers and lie evenly on the horse's back, so that the rider's weight is properly distributed.

Your seat as a rider also plays an important role. A good saddle helps you sit stably and in balance, allowing you to guide your horse more easily and clearly. Therefore, it is wise to always try on a saddle or try it out before you buy it. This way, you can be sure that it is comfortable and fits both you and your horse well.

Finally, the material of the saddle is also something to consider. A good leather saddle often lasts longer and will conform over time to both the horse and the rider.

Are you still unsure which saddle fits best? Then a saddler or specialist can help you make the right choice!
