How often should you train a horse per week? Tips for riders

How often and for how long should you train a horse to make progress without overexerting your four-legged friend? There's no standard answer, as every horse is different. Age, fitness, and level all play a role in how often you can responsibly train a horse. In this blog, you'll learn how to determine a healthy and effective training rhythm.

Horse training: What is a good training schedule?

Insufficient training leads to stagnation, while too much strain can result in injuries, fatigue, or reluctance. A good training schedule, therefore, revolves around a balance between work and rest.

How many times a week should you train your horse?

A schedule with, for example, 4 to 5 active days and 1 to 2 rest days per week works well for many horses.

Training a young horse requires a different approach than training an older horse. For young horses, short training sessions with clear, simple exercises and sufficient breaks work best. This allows them to calmly process new stimuli and stay motivated.

Older horses, on the other hand, benefit from light, regular exercise to stay supple and fit. Long or strenuous training sessions are often not necessary. Always pay close attention to signs such as stiffness, fatigue, or conversely, extra energy. By paying attention to these, you can adjust the training and prevent overexertion.

How long should a training session last?

Do you want to train your horse in a healthy way? Then quality is more important than duration. In most cases, 30 to 60 minutes is sufficient, including a gentle warm-up and cool-down. Difficult or strenuous exercises often only need to be done for a short time to be effective. By training your horse in a targeted manner, you prevent unnecessary strain. Do you notice that your horse is losing concentration or getting tired? Then end the training when something goes well. By stopping on a positive note, your horse remains motivated and will be eager to train again next time.

Examples of varied training methods

More important than the number of training days is the variety in training methods. By training your horse in a varied way, you work on both fitness and suppleness, and you prevent overexertion and boredom. Examples include:

• Dressage work (technique and suppleness)
• Hacking (fitness and mental relaxation)
• Groundwork or lunging
• Cavaletti or light jumping
• Hand-walking
• Rest days or pasture turnout
