Een paard leren springen, hoe doe je dat?

Teaching a horse to jump, how do you do that?

Do you want to start show jumping training or do you dream of competing one day? Then you might be asking yourself: how do you teach a horse to jump? It all starts with good preparation. Many riders think you need a lot of experience to jump, but that's not the case. Even if you're just starting, you can begin with simple exercises. In this blog, you'll learn everything about teaching a horse to jump!

Teach your four-legged friend to jump in 5 steps

Teaching a horse to jump starts with patience and repetition. If you go too fast or start without a clear progression, you'll lose control. But with these five steps, you'll build a good foundation:

1.     Groundwork and poles
Start with low poles on the ground. Let your four-legged friend get used to them while you work in-hand or ride quietly. The goal is for you to learn to approach obstacles together without tension.

2.     Training pace and control
Before you jump, you need to have control over pace and direction. Practice changes of pace and riding in straight lines. A horse or pony that is responsive to your leg will jump more confidently.

3.     First small jumps
Introduce a low obstacle such as a cross pole. Keep it low and simple. Give your four-legged friend space to assess the jump themselves. Reward relaxation and calmness.

4.     Repetition and progression
Jump short, clear lines. Think of one or two obstacles in a row. Vary distances and types of jumps. This helps with your horse or pony's coordination and balance.

5.     Refining technique
When you are jumping relaxed together, you can work on rhythm, posture, and distances. You are now training not only the jump itself but also how you ride afterward.

Good equipment instills confidence

Teaching a pony or horse to jump is about more than just technique. It requires cooperation, balance, and mutual trust. The right equipment supports this process. When you are comfortable, can move freely, and feel secure in the saddle, you can guide your pony or horse better during training or competitions.

At Joline, you'll find rider apparel specially designed for riders who want to grow in their sport. Think of sturdy yet flexible riding breeches that stay in place, breathable shirts for intensive training days, and jackets that move with you without constricting.

For example, soft, comfortable saddle pads, stylish ear bonnets in matching colors, and a show rug that provides a polished look.
